Indigenous Trees of Aravali: Bael
Bael, Aegle marmelos, commonly known as bel, also called Bengal quince, Japanese Bitter Orange, Elephant apple, Stone apple, or Wood apple, is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. It is a highly resilient tree, able to tolerate severe drought conditions and poor, shallow soils typical of the Aravalli region. The tree flourishes alongside other native dry deciduous trees like Dhak and Kikar in restored woodlands. It is a deciduous small to medium-sized tree with trifoliate leaves. The fruit is extensively used in traditional medicine for relief from chronic diarrhea, dysentery, and constipation. The sherbet made from the pulp of the fruit helps lower body heat. Bael is considered to be sacred by Hindus, and its leaves and fruits are an integral part of the worship of Lord Shiva.
